 The pens I use are just basic Bic pens (which I believe they actually changed the formula for recently so I am migrating to Papermate pens since they have remained consistent, the Bics just don't work as well as they once did. The Bic ink leaks a lot now, I can attest that it didn't used to). Anyway, whether they are Bic or Papermate I always use the cheap, 'bag of 20 for a dollar', pens that you use all the time. I like the idea of using cheap crap to create with, it means a lot more to me personally and I guess I get more of a feeling of accomplishment as well as a 'screw the lady at the art store who laughed at me and told me that you can't draw portraits with ballpoint pens' kind of satisfaction. For most of these I used BIC Stic Grip pens and they were great but lately I have bought the same packs I bought before and they suck. I believe, absolutely, that they changed something in how they make that pen. They all leak now and spit out blobs of ink at the worst possible time. I've switched to the regular Bic Round Stic pens. They are much better. You can get a bag of them for like 2 bucks. Use Strathmore Bristol Vellum paper and stack it 2 high (so there is more cushion underneath to help you shade).
