How are you able to shade at different levels with a pen? Is it because of the paper you use?

The paper helps. I use Bristol Vellum and I stack it 2 high. Basically it gives a little bit of cushion so the surface isn't so hard. For instance if you try to shade on a piece of typing paper that is directly on a tapletop you'll find it's impossible. The little bit of cushioning that the 2 layers of vellum provide makes a lot of difference. Btw it's all shaded with the pen, there is no smudging or anything. You can not touch it with your skin because the oils in your skin will cause it to yellow over time. Thanks for the comment, if you have any other questions let me know!

Strathmore Bristol Vellum. I stack it two high to create cushion, it helps when trying to lightly shade with the pen. :)

:) Yeah everything in this image was done with ballpoint pen. The paper is Strathmore brand Bristol-vellum. It helps to put another sheet of it under the one you are working on the make the surface a little softer so you can shade better. Go to my site and look at the ballpoint pen section under 'online gallery', there are a few close up shots there.

Do you mean this pen [link] ? I'll try to draw something... maybe (this seems difficult to do, no eraser, no corrections... but fantastic effect :) )

These are what I'm using now. So far these are my favorites. I was using the grip version but they tend to leak a lot. These are pretty stable. [link]
